Thesis Award and Patent Application

May/June 2018

Dr. Ibrahim Sadiek received the prestigious Faculty Prize of the Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics at Kiel University for his outstandig PhD thesis "New Mid-IR-CRD Spectrometer for Organohalogen Detection and Innovative Applications of Saturation Spectroscopy". Congratulations! In an extraordinary breadth, the thesis spans the bridge between spectrometer development, high resolution spectroscopy, and practical detection of trace gases in environmental systems. Part of the thesis was devoted to the development of a very innovative detection scheme for trace gases that holds the potential to significantly expand the capabilities of absorption based spectrometers.

Consequently, a patent "Method for simultaneous measurement of several trace gases based on selective optical saturation spectroscopy" has been filed, in particular to protect the idea of "two-species - one wavelength detection". The PhD project was supported by the HOSST (Helmholtz Research School for Ocean System Science and Technology) program and the Kiel cluster of excellence "Future Ocean", both aiming to promote interdisciplinary research in the field of marine sciences.
