iPEPICO Measurements at Swiss Light Source

SwissLightShowFor the first time, the combustion team has performed measurements at a synchrotron light source from June 24th to July 3rd 2014. In a joint project with Elke Goos (DLR - Institute of Combustion Technology, project coordination) and Patrick Hemberger (Paul Scherrer Institute), iPEPICO measurements have been performed at the VUV beamline station at the SLS (Swiss Light Source) in Villingen, Switzerland. The main objective of the campaign was to investigate the dissociative photoionization of cyanogen azide (NCN3) and the NCN ground state radical. Among other things, the obtained threshold photoelectron spectra will help us to determine precise thermochemical data of the NCN radical with far-reaching consequences for the predictive modelling of nitrogen oxide pollutant formation in combustion processes. Nancy Faßheber did a superb and exhausting job in synthesizing and safely handling the highly toxic & explosive NCN3. Even though a thorough safety concept had been worked out in advance, everyone was a bit nervous when we transported the diluted NCN3 mixtures from the chemistry lab straight through the main hall to the beamline.
