Baltic GasEx 2018

In June 2018 and again in September 2018, Florian Lange and Gernot Friedrichs, supported by Nhat-Thao Ton-Nu, took part in two research cruises on R/V ALKOR in the framework of the Balic Sea Gas Exchange Experiment (Baltic Gas Ex) in Eckernförde Bay.

The aim of the interdisciplinary Baltic GasEx study was to make simultaneous measurements of air-sea gas exchange and the natural surfactant state. In particular, next to additional experiments, 3He/SF6 dual tracer (David Ho group, Univ. of Hawaii at Manoa, USA) and eddy covariance techniques (Christa Marandino group, GEOMAR, Kiel) were applied to determine gas transfer velocities. AC polarography (Anja Engel group, GEOMAR, Kiel) and sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (Friedrichs group, Univ. Kiel) were used to quantify surface active compounds. In addition to laser-based sum-frequency spectroscopy we also analyzed the collected ocean microlayer samples by recording Langmuir trough compression isotherms and measuring the surface tension. All data together (hopefully) will (i) demonstrate that the organic enriched microlayer influences the air-sea trace gas exchange and (ii) help to develop improved wind speed/gas exchange parametrizations for inland sea settings.
